Practice Makes Perfect – Pick Up A Guitar Today

Learning how to play a musical instrument can be a rewarding experience for children and adults alike. It may seem like a daunting task to begin with but by learning in bite sized chunks, playing an instrument can become joyful and fun.

Playing music is a way of expressing yourself which can be good for your health as it helps to release pent up emotions and reduce stress levels. Strong evidence goes to prove that playing an instrument can also help those who suffer with dyslexia and autism.

Many parents encourage their children to learn to play an instrument as, in addition to being fun, it can bring a sense of focus and discipline into children’s lives and improve their learning and understanding. Studies show that being musical can alter the brain of young people by improving their language skills and reading levels, and can even increase the IQ!

So if you learnt to play an instrument at a young age but gave up in your teens, it may not have been such a waste of time….

You are never too old or young to learn and becoming musical is a fabulous way to learn about one of the arts and world musical culture. So where do you start?

Choosing which musical instrument you want to learn is a good start. There are quite a few things to consider…. You need to take into account what type of music you enjoy listening to, for example if you like rock music you may consider learning the electric guitar or drums, however if classical is your passion maybe the piano or violin would be more suited to you. Also you need to bear in mind what budget you have to spend and the weight of the instrument.

Some instruments can be very expensive but rest assured that there is an instrument out there for everyone – small budget or large budget. If buying an instrument for a child it is a good idea to go to a music shop and try out different instruments and feel the weight of them. Several instruments, including the cello, are very heavy and you need to keep in mind how long they need to be held up for!

A guitar is a great first instrument to learn as it can gel you or your child together with other musicians to form a band and dream of a rock star lifestyle!

There are three different types of guitar namely the electric guitar, bass guitar and acoustic guitar. Again choosing the right one for you is important and will depend on which style of music you want to play. Electric guitars suit rock whereas acoustic guitar work best for classical and folk music.

It is worthwhile going to a music shop to scout out which guitars are the best and most suited to you and there are many different makes including Fender and Taylor for you to try before you buy.

Lastly it is worth investing in private music lessons as there is nothing more frustrating than realising you have learnt the wrong technique by trying to teach yourself! Make sure you tell your teacher what sort of music you want to learn so you don’t get bored and quit. Remember practice makes perfect!
